The KMT Story

Latest News

In 2004 KMT was involved in:

  1. Gaining access to and overseeing construction of about 2 miles of trail along an old rail bed from Benton into Winslow (with the Waterville Rotary Club (who made it their Centenary Project), the Town of Benton, the State's Recreational Trail Fund, and special contribution from Paul Newman).
  2. Clearing and constructing a trail along Messalonskee Stream side of the North Street soccer fields and recreational area, working closely with the City of Waterville, the Waterville Sunrise Rotary Club (for whom this was their Centenary Project), and the State's Recreational Trail Fund. This trail will make loops of different lengths, all handicapped accessible, thanks to the City's widened sidewalks along North Street, about 1 mile.
  3. Clearing and pathway development around an island in the Kennebec just south of the Hathaway Building in the South End of Waterville, thanks to a generous easement from FPL, about 1 mile.

KMT has applied for the following grants:

  1. Development of a Waterville Waterfront trail from Head of Falls towards the railroad yard (from Maine DOT's Transportation Enhancement Funds, requesting $316,100).
  2. Enhancements to the historic 2-cent bridge across the Kennebec between Waterville and Winslow, including a safety fence and improvements to make bridge access handicapped accessible (from Maine DOT's Transportation Enhancement Funds, requesting $213,000).
  3. Development of a trail in Winslow connecting the schools with the 2-cent bridge and riverside trails through Marden's Kennebec Development Park (the former Scott Paper mill) (from Maine DOT's Transportation Enhancement Funds, requesting $400,000).
  4. Signs and other trail amenities that will make city streets from Head of Falls to the North Street Recreational Facilities in Waterville a connector between Kennebec and Messalonskee riverside trails (from Maine DOT's Transportation Enhancement Funds, requesting $180,000). Engineering for this section is on-going this winter.
  5. Amenities for the Benton-Winslow trail segment. This project will involve Hardy Girls-Healthy Women, and Rape Crisis in the design and implementation, so that this trail can be used to design all trails so that women will use them often. From Maine Recreational Trail Fund, requesting $24,000.
  6. Improvements to Water and King Streets in Fairfield to enable them to serve as paved portions of the West Kennebec Trail. From Maine Recreational Trail Fund, requesting $30,000. This grant builds on earlier grants used to make improvements at Mill Island Park, and south on the river side of Main Street, past the boat landing, Community Center and playground.
